Hi Stuck on what to look at Budget of 7k max for a decent looking and most importantly low maintenance / cheap to service diesel that has at least 100bhp as my work car is a 1.4 hid and has no power!
Preferably a hatchback and I'm not fussed on 5 door or 3 !
Anyone have any suggestions?

Any particular reason it has to be diesel? What kind of miles/use will it have?

Just got rid of a clio 182 and I prefer the delivery of a turbo diesel these days in my ripe age. Not massive miles, but I do travel fair motorway distances most weekends 100/120 miles to visit friends and the clio wasn't the right car and neither was the hdi
I'd seen the 2.2 civics which look ok!

Look at Ibiza FR and Ibiza Cupras, really good cars and very tunable if you are that way inclined (Plus they are pre-DPF so you don't have that to worry about)
Fabia VRS and mk4 Golfs are effectively the same car so look at those too, the ibiza imo is the better looking of the 3, I had a petrol FR tuned to 215bhp and it was excellent, never once let me down.

And it only takes a turbo/injector etc... to land you with a big bill and wipe out any cost savings. A big petrol (3.0 ish) will give you the torquey power you enjoy but even better, and should get 30-35mpg on the motorway (not hanging around). MPG by going diesel is a false economy (pun intended) unless you live on the motorways.

Civic type s diesel and a remap should be a winner if within budget.

Thanks for the advice guys, but not getting a petrol again!
Te Ibiza looks like a nice alternative to the Skoda, thanks!
Are the pd130 and pd150 engines both decent, which is the more reliable of the 2?

They are both reliable motors, neither have a DPF AFAIK and both are the generation before the injector failure issues that have affected the 2.0 VAG TDI engines that replaced it.
If you intend on tuning then get a 150 as it is far more tunable.
I am biased but i'd be getting a turbo petrol if I were you instead, All the benefits of a diesel (apart from the MPG which based on what you have said isn't really a massive issue) but sounds nice and doesn't only have 5k revs to play with.
As stated, I had a petrol 1.8t ibiza FR, 150bhp standard, a simple remap took it to 215bhp/260lb of torque and it was an animal.. brakes struggled but oh well. Around town I still got around 30mpg, on a run I could comfortably get 38-40 so it wasn't exactly awful on petrol unless you hammered it everywhere.

Pd130 is said to be more reliable albeit slightly down on power. An egr delete and remap with an oil catch can and your doing well.
I'd much rather have a petrol though myself. I have a v6 4motion at the moment (heavily modified) which is a great q car.

Great thanks all
Anyone have experience of the diesel civic 06 onwards? It seems an awfully big engine for the low bhp, not that I'm bothered as it has a large amount of torque. Bu seems odd. Also it seems it's chain driven which must be a bonus?
