BBS-LM said: Great car, and with low mileage, but good luck getting £25K for it. Your going to need it. Great car indeed - it was not just me then that thought this car was overpriced. 25k would perhaps get you a lot newer and faster Audi??

the b5 is quicker around the UK than some of the later or more powerful cars as it is still quite narrow and compact for a 5 seater estate. A good b-road bullet

Only worth this money if a potential buyer wants one to park in a display garage rather than actually drive. If you wanted to put miles on it far better to buy a non-stock one that's been used - it'll be more fun and cost you less overall
There's probably about 5 people in the country that'd entertain buying this - only needs 1 to open the wallet and it's sold. Otherwise we'll still be discussing it in 12 months!

Actually, the non-cosworth S4 engine is easier (and cheaper!) to tune than the one from the RS4.
RS2 remains my personal champion...

Had my B5 RS4 for nearly six years and still loving it. Bought at six years old and with only 19,000 on the clock, it's since done 35,000 brilliant miles which I've enjoyed immensely. Why? Well it's a genuine Q-car you can park anywhere, it's built like a brick privy, comfortable for cruising (awesome Bose entertainment) and a total weapon when needed - what could be cooler? Road tax is also cheap - the car is a 2000 model year so it's just over £200 - insurance is relatively cheap (£400 a year fully comp) and to top it all off it's got a massive boot for road trips. My advice? If you're looking at buying one don't worry about the soft wheels thing, mine have all been fine, and everyone says the standard stoppers aren't up to it but that's also garbage. Just maintain it properly and you quite literally have a crackin' car for all occasions. In fact throughout my tenure, apart from being serviced on the nose by Audi, mine's only needed one new wheel bearing, new brakes and tyres (last year) and a couple of bits of trim here and there after normal use takes its inevitable toll. So if 0-62mph in 4.8 seconds and the maddest turbo kick from 5,800rpm to way past 7,000rpm are your thing, go and drive one - truly epic and a superb ownership proposition.

sanctum said: OwenK said: Is there much of a difference engine wise between these and the engine in my A6 2.7t? Is there easy tuning potential out there or is the old A4 body just that much lighter? 2.7T in the A6 has K03 turbos, the RS4 has K04 ones which are bigger and give higher boost. Very tunable though, sport cats, high flow exhaust and a remap will see about 315hp, but you will need a new clutch. Having driven both the B5 and B7 RS4's, the B7 is a much more refined animal. The B5 is very fast but is all about brute force, hammering the road ahead into submission, show it some corners and it rapidly shows its weight. The B7 introduced a much needed balance to the chassis and round a track or over a twisty B-road, the stock B7 will leave a stock B5 standing. Much more tuning potential on the B5 though, if that's your thing. Yes the 2.7T has the K03’s instead of the K04’s, there’s also slight differences in the internals; now Audi’s standard 2.7 V6 has super strong internals to begin with, but they stepped it up a notch with the RS4. A quick spot check under the hood; Silver Bi-turbo badge on the engine is 2.7T; a RED Bi-turbo badge on the engine is RS4. But there’s very little to tell them apart. I love the RS4, but £26K is way too much, sorry. If you want real “budget RS” performance and like a real sleeper look, try the 2.7T A6 Avant. It’s basically a slightly de-tuned RS4 in an A6 body, and is a very capable car in its own right, even if it doesn’t have the “RS” badge, but at the third of the price of an RS4, it does offer good value for money. Now correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe if a turbo fails on the RS4, it’s an engine out job, but on the A6 2.7T it isn’t? Yeah, I do own one; and the only thing to pass me on the motorway was an RS6!

What Brighton Speed said.
Had mine for nearly 3 years now and it's epic.
Completely standard apart from an MRC remap which fills in the midrange torque nicely.
Coming up to 99,000 miles now and never let me down.
Porsche Turbo performance in a practical estate. Stealthy - People either "know" or just think it's an old Audi estate i've looked after well!
I can't help thinking that these have bottomed out price wise and well looked after ones will only rise in value.

Duncan What's not to like bout them (apart from perhaps the green colour on the car in question) Mine got replaced by a B7 avant, which will no doubt eventually get replaced by a b8 Avant in the next couple of years I personally can't think of another car that does everything an RS4 avant does so well ?

I love these cars! Cheap VED too, if you get a pre March 2001 car...
This model was always slated for being too understeery on track by the usual racing driver brigade, but as usual the Audi makes a fabulous 365 day a year road car.

Of the RS4 versions, I think a B5 estate would be my favourite. Cool, haven't seen a C4 S4/S6 for a long time. Am I right in thinking they built a few of these with the engine out of the Audi V8 too? As for the B5 RS4, I don't think it will be too long before prices start rising for good, usable examples of these. It's a car, along with the E34 M5 3.8, that's on my watchlist

Always check the head castings and vin etc to see they are genuine, only 180 rhd made for UK, and rumour has it almost 80 plus written off, so final 100 or so remain and not all fit for the road either. All for £12 to 15K now dependent upon history, mileage and condition.

When I was looking for a quattro estate recently I really fancied an RS2 or B5 RS4 but had a bit of a reality check and decided I couldn't afford to run one as a daily, amazing cars but the RS4 in particular can bite big time IF the turbos or cams need doing.

It's funny, back in the day they were slated for rather crap handling, due to their heavy nose. Yet now they are viewed with such rose tinted specs. I'm sure they have great straight line grunt, however I'd rather opt for the better all round package of a newer RS4. The cherry on the top would be a real V8 burble.

Only some journos slated them for that, while many others back in the day raved about their all-weather ability. Car Magazine chose to take one on the Gumball across Europe to Russia
